It’s my favourite time of year and Magical Girls are my favourite things, so why not combined the two? I’m going to share some of the most perfect Halloween Magical Girl series and movies to satisfy your dose of creepy cuteness. Photos and spoiler-free summaries are below! Sally the Witch (1966 & 1989 series, 1990 Film) Sally is the classic cutie that “officially” started the Magical Girl animated genre. She was inspired by BeWitched and is the perfect combination of cute & spooky. You can watch the original 1966 & 1989 series separate, the movie wraps up the 1989 series. Her story consist of a series of magical hi-jinks on Earth while trying to hide herself as a normal human girl and make friends before she has to go back to her home - the Magic Kingdom. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1969 part of “The Archie Comedy” Hour & 1970 “Sabrina and the Groovie Goolies” Series), Sabrina The Animated Series (1999 Series), Sabrina: Friends Forever (2002), Sabrina’s Secret Life (2004), Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch (2013 Series) Of course I needed to include Sally’s animated American counterpart: Sabrina! Like Sally all of Sabrina’s series features magical hi-jinks while trying to maintain her identity as a normal human girl, though while Sally was in elementary school Sabrina is a high school student so she has the added difficulties of that. Each series can be watched individually; depending on your taste in animation aesthetics some may be better than the others. Majokko Shimai no Yoyo to Nene (2013 Movie) Majokko Shimai no Yoyo to Nene is actually one of my favourite anime movies and Magical Girl pieces of media. Yoyo & Nene are two sisters who get separated- one get’s sucked into the human world & the other is stuck in the magical world trying to save her. Watch them race against the clock to save each other & possibly even the world! This one has the most Halloween imagery out of the bunch (lots of pumpkins & skulls & classic looking witch outfits). Mahou Shoujo-tai Arusu “Tweeny Witches” (2004 series) Tweeny Witches has a unique art style which I love. It’s neat because unlike the others before (with witches coming to the human world) this one’s reverse! Arusu is a human who believes in magic with all her heart and winds up being transported to the Witch World! But magic isn’t at all like she thought, there’s rules & politics & danger. The vibe in this one is creepier than the others on this list and I think it’s the perfect Halloween treat. Mahou Tsukai Tai! - “Magic User’s Club” (1996 & 1999 Series) A group of students who all posses magical abilities form a club to help them learn how to utilize their skills. This anime is quintessentially 90s & is perfect for anyone suffering from cartoon nostalgia. It also features 2 prominent Magical Boys, one of which being very fem & very gay. Tokimeki Tonight (1982 series) Daughter of a Vampire & a Werewolf Ranze is comfortable in her life as a normal human girl - until she discovers she finally has demon powers like her parents! Now her parents want her to find a husband in the Demon World, which would be swell if she didn’t already have a major crush on a human boy. Shoujo hi-jinks ensue with a spooky twist- probs the most Halloween story line considering there’s all these monsters in it. Shout out to kawaiibunny3 for introducing me to this series! Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989 Movie) This list wouldn’t be complete without Kiki’s Delivery Service! Young witch Kiki goes out on her 13th birthday to find her own town & talent. Of course it’s not as easy as she wants it, but anything worth having is worth fighting for. Do I even need to say anymore? I’m sure you know Kiki. Sugar Sugar Rune (2004 series) Witches Chocolate & Vanilla are sent to the human world to collect hearts & compete to see who will be the next witch queen! This is probably the most “Magical Girl” one on the list as it’s filled with a lot of tropes most MG fans know and love - magical items/weapons, transformations, etc.- and out of all the series it has the most Halloween imagery. Bibi Blocksberg (1994 series) Basically the German mash up of Sabrina & Sally. Bibi was actually created in the 80s but she didn’t get animated until the 90s. There’s also a live action movie too. Kuromajo-san ga Toru!! (2012 series) This is one I actually haven’t started watching yet, it was recommended by kawaiibunny3. They described it as a short comedy series. The summery says when a girl who tries to summon Cupid winds up summoning a black witch who decides to teach her to be a black witch too. Occult mysteries & magical silliness ensues! Ultra Maniac (2003 series) More witches coming to the human world to collect things to be the next ruler! Nina’s human friend knows she’s a witch though, and she’s not quite adept at magic as some of the other witches from other series (or even her own). This one also features transformations and tropes magical girl fans recognize. Little Witch Academia (2013 short) & Little Witch Academia: Mahou Shikake no Parade (2015 short) Wrapping up the list with another favourite! Both shorts focus on Akko Kagari - a novis witch learning to use her deep seeded amazing powers at a magical school. Both the art style and story lines are great and honestly next to Yoyo to Nene I feel like it’s the perfect Halloween Magical Girl piece. And that’s it! I hope everything enjoyed or will enjoy their Hallowwn Magical Girl binge. Do you think I missed any? Please let me know! I haven’t seen every Magical Girl series (yet) so it’s entirely possible there’s more perfect Halloweeny ones out there. Please keep in mind that older shows are a product of their time and as such may contain some problematic, harmful, or otherwise offensive material. Final shout outs go to HappinessCharge Precure, Suite Precure & Pripara for including Halloween episodes:
