I already have a list of black + brown magical girls (basically anyone who isn't light skinned) but I want to highlight people telling their own stories. Black Magical Girls created by Black creators should be emphasized - it's important to elevate voices coming from the culture represented. So without further delay, below the cut is a list of black creators creating magical girl content: Princess Love Pon Currently on hiatus, Princess Love Pon is created by ShaunaDraws. The story focuses around Lia, the magical girl known as Princess Love Pon and is a pretty classic magical girl story full of love, pink, and sparkles. This story speaks to the core of magical girl as a genre, if you like 90s shoujo you'll like Princess Love Pon. The comic is available to read up to it's current point for free on the Princess Lov Pon website. Agents of the Realm Agents of the Realm is an ongoing series created by Mildred Louis. The cast itself is multi-ethnic, multi-racial and hella diverse, but Norah Tanner takes lead here- and of the team. The comic itself finds a great balance between heavier moments and comedy and because it features a group of 20 yr old girls it has a very special place in my heart. If you like series with more action this is a great one! You can buy the comics directly on the Agents of the Realm website or read for free! magnifiqueNOIR magnifiqueNOIR is the only magical girl book series I wind up recommending. It's written by Briana Lawrence and features an entire Black cast. MagnifiqueNOIR is the perfect book series for fans of the genre. I cannot stress enough how well Briana captures a very visual genre in writing. I haven't had a chance to read the second book yet but the first blew me out of the water. The second book just came out earlier this year. Thought they were funded through Kickstarter both books are available on Barns and Nobles and Amazon. Adorned by Chi Adorned by Chi is by the all black team at Adorned by Chi. The entire cast of the comic is black and although the physical copies are out of print the digital ones are super cheap and available for download. It's only 5 issues long and a super fun read. Magical Warrior Diamond Heart Magical Warrior Diamond Heart is a soon to be released Visual Novel/Otome game created by Afrolatino artist Pyon. It was wildly successful on Kickstarter and I am so excited for this game to come out! Not only is the main character Diamond Heart black, but so is Clover Vermillion, another magical girl in the series. The demo is available at a "name your price" rate on the website. Hover Girls Recently suggested to me by Amara Macaroni, I haven't read it yet so I can't say much! But this web comic features two black leads and is created by Geneva. SuperChic: Rosemary! Another new recc so I can't say much! Recommend by MahouEcho this web comic is by captainha_ha. I'm not entirely sure if I should include this one because after reading it technically doesn't have a black magical girl in it. It does, however, have Bradley an adorable Mexican magical boy. whether or not he counts as afro-latinx I'm unsure! But the creators does seem to be black so as of now I'm going to leave it on here. Only one chapter is out so far, so give it a read! The Effigies Series The author found me and recommended this series! I don't usually include book series in these list, but like MagnifiqueNOIR this one looks too good to pass up! I can't wait to sink my teeth into it. The Effigies series is written by Sarah Raughley an can be purchased at Barns and Nobles. Did I miss someone? Do you know of another black creator who's creating black magical girl media? Let me know and I'll update the list and credit you in the process! If you have time or finances - support the Black Lives Matter movement. Sign petitions, watch charity streams, attend protest/demonstrations, donate money. Above all, listen to black voices and support black creators. Last updated June 11, 2020
