The next Magical Girl list I'd like to build and keep track of is Latinx and Hispanic magical girls! Being Puerto Rican myself, I always get a little excited seeing latinx girls showcased.

This will have some overlap with the black & brown magical girl list, but is intended to specifically highlight girls who are culturally and ethnically Latinx and/or Hispanic.

As always these lists are intended to be living documents and can be expanded upon. If you believe I've forgotten a character please reach out! I may not know of them or have just forgotten them. Thank you all for reading!

i used to be questioned a lot on my sources for my 'Fight like a Girl' panel, so I added a slide at the end with my primary sources, but my research usually goes further than that. While I do prioritize the voices of Japanese Women I don't limit myself to them because they are not the only group of people impacted by the genre. The genre of magical girl has existed in the west as long as it has in Japan and what's 'good' vs. what's 'bad' is reflected primarily through the lens of the culture that consumes them.

This being said, here's a list of some of the sources I use along with others people may find interesting. This list is primarily focused on on peer reviewed or cited work, research papers, and interview pieces with either experts in their respective fields or have insider information due to working within the industry.

I've done a list of Western Magical Girl shows​ but outside of anime in Japan there's a number of Magical Girl shows from Korea and China. So here's a brief list!

Just like my Western show list I am only including animated series and no live action, comic books, or any other type of media. This is by no means a complete list and I'm finding more to add frequently. . If you see one missing, let me know!

I already have a list of black + brown magical girls (basically anyone who isn't light skinned)  but I want to highlight people telling their own stories. Black Magical Girls created by Black creators should be emphasized - it's important to elevate voices coming from the culture represented.

Miracle romances have been a common thing in the magical girl genre since the 90s when Sailor Moon popularized the phrase. Even before then shows like Creamy Mami and Magical Emi usually had some sort of romance angle going on. So, in a genre with an emphasis on miracle romances which shows are the MOST ROMANTIC? Or at the very least which ones are the most focused on the romance aspect of the story.

​While this may not be the "most" of either of those options here's a list of 4 magical girl anime that have romance as the focus.

So here's a list of Magical Girl Indie comics! Some are available for free online, some you’re able to purchase as a PDF or even a physical copies. Bold are faves and an asterisk (*) means they are currently not updating or that the series is complete.

This is by no means a complete list and I'm finding more to add frequently. . If you see one missing, let me know!

I do my best when it comes to web comics as many of the web comics available are incomplete or without much content. Before adding to the list i try to review them to make sure they meet at least one of the following criteria:

• The story is either shown to be complete or continuously updated in some capacity (maybe the webcomic itself has not bee updated but the artist is providing status updates projects concerning the comic - like kickstarters, works in progress, patreons, etc.)
• There is enough substantial material for it to be a meaty story even if the comic was abandoned. This could be page count or supplementary material like written fiction, sketches, one off drawings, etc.
• The idea is (to me) original/unique enough to warrant addition even if the comic itself seems pretty incomplete/not substantial.

For the sake of this list I'm defining Indie Comic as self-published not through any major comic publishers such as Boom, DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, etc.

And.. uh… I’m gonna level with y’all, it’s not at all impressive. If anyone can think of any others I would be highly appreciative but the list of magical girl shows that have magical boys in it is bigger than this list. which is… sad imo. Hopefully the future will be better.​

After a twitter poll my next Magical Girl list is… Magical Women (Magical Girls who are currently 18+ yrs old)


Middle School and younger seems to be the quintessential age for Magical Girls. But what about us ladies who grew up and never had a chance to run into a magical cat or be hit in the head with our henshin compact? This list is dedicated to everyone who holds out hope that they can still become a magical girl!

I will be including all works in this list- western, eastern, indie comics, etc. because it is very difficult finding magical women.
